 The Group / Our Skills

With a staff of 3600, the Sanef Group has built up expertise in five areas : its two main businesses - as motorway concession-holder and operator - and its three related activities - telematics, telecommunications, and the promotion of service areas.

2 principal businesses :
A promoter of major road projects
An operator of road infrastructures
Starting from its main businesses, Sanef has developed three connected areas of expertise :
Telematic systems
Telecommunications
Development and promotion of commercial activities

In the framework of the two concessions granted to it by the government, Sanef has built up considerable expertise in planning and running major road projects, encompassing funding, design and construction.
- Design, property negotiations, securing release of land, organisation and supervision of construction work, pricing management and traffic forecasts ;
- A market leader as regards construction costs and prompt completion ;
- Ability to execute projects which meet sustainable development standards.
Sanef has also acquired particular expertise in terms of fixed operating systems (toll payment, traffic control and telecommunications) and, in particular, software suites for toll payment.
Finally Sanef has acknowledged skills in designing, supplying and installing toll payment systems and lanes fitted with automatic card payment systems in France and abroad (Hungary, Poland, China, Tunisia, Morocco, Belgium and Croatia).

Sanef operates the motorways for which it holds the concession with the maximum of efficiency, maintaining the best possible levels of safety, convenience and traffic flow for its customers.
Finally, Sanef benefits from its operating experience and the professionalism of its staff by offering special services to local firms and communities (for example, through contracts covering winter road clearance or tunnel management).

- Electronic toll payment
Sanef has over fifteen years' experience in running its own electronic toll collection system. It was the first French concession-holding company to introduce electronic toll collection facilities to its entire network in 1992. It is now preparing to introduce electronic toll collection for trucks in early 2006.
- Other telematic activities
Using the technologies developed for electronic toll payment (such as automatic reading and recognition of number plates, and satellite location) Sanef devises telematic solutions for traffic management purpose and "intelligent transport systems", notably in the field of traffic information (Eliott®, Foninfo) and in that of staff and customer safety (Totem®).
Sanef has acquired the masternaut company whose speciality is the production and marketing of systems for monitoring and optimising mobile facilities. This enabled Sanef to acquire the technologies of satellite location (GPS), mobile telephony (GSM and GPRS) and digital mapping, as a result of which it will be offering, in the next few months, various service bundles (fleet management, journey assistance, traffic information, mobility aids, safety and road assistance services).

The Group has a fibre optic network 3742 kilometres in length, 177 pylons and an Ethernet data transmission network. It is also the only motorway operator to be licensed as a telecommunications operator, which enables it to offer firms and communities in the vicinity of its network a comprehensive range of services (management, operation and maintenance of local loops, specialised high-speed links, video surveillance, internet protocol (IP) telephony, video conferencing and video telephony).

 As at 31 December 2004, the Sanef group was operating 72 service areas, open around the clock, offering restaurant, shopping and hotel facilities.
In order to attract new customers, and to provide them with quality services matching their new needs, Sanef is developing a new concept at its service areas known as "le Village Commercial", notably at the Assevillers service area on the A1 motorway. This is characterised by a single building encompassing all the activities and services available to customers, with the installation of new urban shop signs and links to local roads.
